SELECT ROOM AND DEPARTURE:
Experience the Sognefjord and the Flåmsbana Line in combination with two of our historical hotels, Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand and Fretheim Hotel in Flåm. A popular short break with historical atmosphere and stunning scenery, plus the world’s most beautiful train journey nearby!
The Flåmsbana Line is one of the world’s most spectacular train journeys, with panoramic views over some of the wildest and most magnificent scenery Norway’s fjord landscape has to offer.
Spend a night at Kviknes Hotel, enjoying the scenery and fjord views. If you want to get closer to nature, there are a number of well-signed paths in the Balestrand mountains.
From Balestrand, the tour continues to Flåm and Fretheim Hotel. The Flåmsbana Line railway is right next to Fretheim Hotel.
Kviknes Hotel is situated 190 km from Bergen, 64 km from Sogndal Airport Haukåsen and 50 meters from the Balestrand Pier.
Driving distance between Balestrand and Flåm: 115 km/approx 2 hours
Fretheim Hotel is situated 170 km from Bergen, 70 km from Voss and 70 km from Sogndal Airport.
Flåmsbana is one of the steepest standard-gauge railway lines in the world. The train journey passes through fantastic scenery, past Rallarvegen – the Bergen Line construction road, precipitous rock faces, foaming waterfalls, and through 20 tunnels. There are so many viewpoints along the way that many people feel the need to travel up and down several times between the high mountains and the fjord to see everything!
In just an hour, the train conveys you from sea level by the Sognefjord in Flåm to the high-mountain station of Myrdal on the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, 865 m above sea level. Myrdal is also a station on the Bergen Line, which means that the Flåmsbana Line offers connections with most trains travelling between Bergen and Oslo.
National Geographic Traveler Magazine has named the Flåmsbana Line one of the top 10 train journeys in Europe, while Lonely Planet went even further in 2014, declaring it the best in the world!
The Flåm–Myrdal return trip takes 2 hours and must be booked independently here or by ringing +47 815 00 888.

The tradition of hospitality at Balholm stretches back to 1752. The Kvikne family, who own the hotel, took over in 1877, marking the start of fast-paced
development, which continues to this day. The hotel was built in the Swiss chalet style; the original character of the place has been left unchanged
despite several new buildings, rebuildings and extensions. Kviknes is a modern hotel with soul and atmosphere, and is one of the largest tourist hotels
