SELECT ROOM AND DEPARTURE:
What could be more tempting than local flavours from the Nordfjord district and the Sognefjord? And as part of the same package, we invite you to enjoy a beautiful drive on the Gaularfjellet Norwegian Scenic Route.
This self-drive holiday starts at Gloppen Hotel in Sandane, Sogn and Fjordane, which has become widely known for its emphasis on local food and ingredients. The hotel, which dates back to 1829, is run by a team headed by Preben Moen. Sit back and enjoy locally sourced food in historical surroundings. (Dinner 13.00-22.00, sundays 13.00-20.00)
Gloppen Hotel is just 10 km from Sandane Airport, Anda and 250 km from Bergen.
From Gloppen and Nordfjord, you’ll drive past the distinctive Mt. Eggenipa before heading through beautiful Jølster. Look out for waterfalls and flocks of goats in the fabulous Våtedalen valley, before continuing along the shore of Jølstravatn lake towards the Gaularfjellet Norwegian Scenic Route. The road follows the protected Gaularvassdraget watercourse and offers everything from untamed rapids and waterfalls to tranquil sections where the water seems to glide along silently. Stop at Likholefossen waterfall and take a walk along a section of the 25-km Fossestien hiking path.
Gaularfjellet is a well-kept secret for most people, but for anyone who has discovered the road, it is something quite special.
The ‘Utsikten’ viewing platform and picnic area is the latest addition to the collection of landmarks in the Norwegian landscape. The idea is to provide the curious with views of mountains rising to 1500 m, as well as vistas of the beautiful hairpin bends winding their way down to the Vetlefjord. The viewing platform balances 700 m above the sea and is described by Norwegians Scenic Routes as a large triangular concrete sheet with turned-up corners. It has also been referred to as ‘a giant picnic rug’.
The drive – in your own or a hired car – ends in beautiful Balestrand at the majestic Kviknes Hotel, with its tradition of hospitality stretching back to 1752. The combination of exciting history, warm hospitality and delicious food will make you feel as though you’ve stepped into your very own Norwegian fairy tale! Dinner is served 19.00-21.00.
The ‘art village’ of Balestrand is also known for its architecture, with many beautiful Swiss chalet- and dragon-style villas.
Kviknes Hotel is 190 km from Bergen, 64 km from Sogndal Airport, Haukåsen and close to Balestrand quay.
The Norwegian Travel Museum opened in Balestrand on 1 May 2016. This is an attraction in its own right, illustrating the history of travel and tourism in Norway from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day. There is a separate exhibition on Norway’s Norwegian Scenic Routes.
This unique short break invites you to savour Norwegian farmhouse breakfasts and superb dinners as well as some of the most spectacular of all of Norway’s beautiful scenery.
This is a self-drive short break, using your own or a hired car. DHHS offers discounted rates for car hire from Sixt car rental, and your order confirmation will contain a direct link to make a reservation.
