Halfway between Norway and the North Pole you can visit the world’s Northernmost town. Longyearbyen is located at 78’ North and is surrounded by spectacular Arctic nature. Society here is characterised by the close-knit population making their living under the harsh conditions that are typical of a place so close to the top of the world.
During your stay we recommend taking time to explore some of the town’s main attractions; Huset, Svalbard Museum, the Svalbard Gallery displaying the artwork of Kåre Tveter and Olaf Storø, and Mine Number 3, a coal mining experience taking you back in time to see how it was done over 100 years ago.
Depending on the season, there are many opportunities for fantastic ways to experience Arctic nature and culture. In the summer the fjords are home to boats of all shapes and sizes, exploring Russian settlements of past and present, or observing diverse marine wildlife and glaciers. In the winter we travel mostly snowmobiles, but dog sleds and skis are a quieter alternative.
5 course dinner at the Huset restaurant. Beverage not included.
Visit 78 degrees north and experience the world’s northernmost fine-dining restaurant and wine cellar! Huset – literally: the house – was designed by Jakob Hansen. The mining company Store Norske
Spitsbergen Kullkompani AS started building work in 1948, and the doors opened on 13 October 1951. It was neutrally situated between the different social groups: the mineworkers and the officials. Hroar
Holm, Huset’s former manager, started the wine collection
in the 1980s. The wine cellar is one of the largest in the Nordic region, with more than 20,000 bottles of 1300 different wines. Since 2006, Huset’s wine list has been recognised by Wine Spectator
with two glasses and the designation “Best of Award of Excellence”.
