Imagine being able to holiday at a measured pace, and relax in a unique and distinctive environment, far from the stresses and strains of the city. There
is a place to do just that at the heart of Hardanger:
Utne Hotel is one of Norway’s oldest hotels in continuous
operation in the same building. Since 1722, when Peder Larsson Børsem was granted his innkeeper’s licence, travellers have found board and
lodging here. For several hundred years the hotel has offered a tradition of high-quality care and attention to its guests, with the famous ‘Mother
Utne’ (Torbjørg Utne, 1812–1903) a byword for this tradition. Staying here is like being in a history book, with careful thought given to architectural
details, amenities and decor.
Address: N-5778 Utne
Duration: approx. 8–10 hours for the return trip.
Length: approx. 11 km each way, with a height gain of approx. 900 m.
Season: approx. 15 June – approx. 15 September.
There is a T-marked path from the car park in Skjeggedal to Trolltunga. There are signs along the way showing how far you have walked and how far you have left to go. The hike starts with a steep incline from the car park at Skjeggedal up to Måglitopp. (The Måglibanen cable railway is no longer operational.) The path continues on flat ground before coming to another, more moderate incline. From here, the walk to Trolltunga is relatively flat, with a few moderate gradients.
This is a high-mountain hike and is suitable for people in averagely good shape. Plan well and start early! Note that there is no mobile/cell phone coverage en route. Remember to wear good walking shoes and suitable clothes, and to carry food, drink and a map and compass. Check the weather forecast for the area.
Dinner. Beverage is not included.
Accomodation Hotel Ullensvang in standard room.
Hotel Ullensvang is beautifully situated on the shores of the Hardangerfjord, with a magnificent view of the fjord, the mountains and the Folgefonna
glacier. Hotel Ullensvang has moved with the times since it first opened in 1846, and is owned and run by the same family to this day. The hotel has been
decorated with soul, and is set apart by its exceptional
combination of modern comforts, local traditions and history. The composer Edvard Grieg was a regular guest and his small composer’s hut can
still be seen in the hotel garden.
